My name is Tom, I'm 72. For over 50 years I have voted for candidates that would govern frugally and keep government as small as possible. In my lifetime, I have observed that government does nothing well or efficiently. It always wastes money and enriches politicians putting what's best for the country 2nd. In my childhood in the early 50's, I remember leaving the house for the store and not locking the door. Mothers didn't work and were home with the kids. Only one parent was the breadwinner. I always had and interest in analyzing what made things tick. I observed a gradual change from the 50's till the end of the century that was a concern to me. All levels of government grew as well as the methods for financing them. In the 50's city, county and state government required a 3 cent sales tax. By 1999 that had grown to 10 cents. It took two breadwinners to maintain an average standard of living. Daycare became a necessity. I believe the growth and cost of government caused the need for two breadwinners. What changed from the 50's? 3 cent government has evolved today where states and everyone else looks to the federal government to provide everything. It is free and does not have to be repaid. The federal government is almost 30 trillion in debt. What is it that our government is broke, do people not understand. We are borrowing the money to just pay the interest on the debt. We are not paying down any principal. I think I read that by 2025, the interest on the debt will exceed the total of non-defense federal spending. What if interest on the debt grows to the point that the government is unable to fund social security and medicare. I am concerned about the out of control spending of Congress. I worry about the private sector being able to support this burden of government. We are reaching a tipping point where the number of government workers, protecting their fiefdom, will be able to outvote private sector voters. It is time to see how much government we can do without. If you are sceptical that it can be done, think of the times during budget fights that the we have had government shut downs. Essential services like the FAA were continued, but the rest of government was halted. Did you notice any impact in your daily life? I venture very few. Out of frustration of not being able to affect to size of government, I have developed this blog to propose ideas on how to make it smaller.
